How to find the BEST moving company

Jennifer Zeile • May 16, 2022

Moving is usually an overwhelming time and the last thing you want is for the moving company you hire to do more harm than good...

But finding the BEST moving company is pretty subjective!

Sure- at first glance, most moving companies are pretty much the same…. They all have trucks and movers- right? Well, yes! However, not all moving companies will help you pack, not all have storage available, not all offer replacement or repair coverage for your belongings, not all are registered/ insured/ fully licensed to go any distance that your move may require… and not all even own trucks or have movers on the payroll. So how do you find THE best Moving Company with all these variables AND with all you have going on?

Determine what is most important to you- first and foremost. Rank them in order from Most important to least important and revisit your list often to make sure you’re weighing your options in relation to your priorities. These could include things like:

  1.                Price
  2.                Availability (your preferred dates)
  3.                Service(s) – even ones you may not need but ‘just in case’
  4.                Reputation
  5.                Others- vibe, rapport, process, first impressions, etc.

Then to find the best moving company that meets your criteria:

  •                Ask for referrals friends, family, your realtor, etc.
  •                Check reviews on reputable, neutral/ third party sites like Google, Facebook, BBB, etc.
  •                Interview a few to give you a quote, 2 or 4 is usually best.

Now you have what you should need to pick the best moving company for your relocation.

We always provide a worksheet to families when we provide an estimate. It compiles the basics from 3 different moving companies so you can compare Apples to Apples. Are the estimated cu/ft or weight similar among the estimates you got? If hourly- do they propose the same # of movers and/ or hours? Are the quotes itemized so you can see this information? Do they include the same amount of packing or damage protection coverage (Either insurance or valuation). If not- reach out to the move consultant and see WHY they are making a recommendation different that the others. There may be a great reason- either they missed something, it’s their company policy , or they noticed something the others didn’t.

Making sure that the basics are all comparable, then you can focus on the other factors on your priority list. Yea, exactly…. Don’t forget about those! You may already have a favorite in your mind, or a front runner at least but be sure to check back on y our ranked priority list and think through each of your options. This is the only to find the very best mover for YOU and your relocation.

Happy Moving!
