Of course you can! You can also replace your vehicle’s transmission yourself, rewire your house, and perform your own hip replacement. Wait, no- never mind… maybe you CAN move yourself, but SHOULD you? Moving is one of those things in life, especially when relocating longer distances, that is best left to the professionals, especially affordable long distance movers who can store your items if needed.
The biggest difference is accuracy: an online quote relies on you, the customer, to put everything you own into an inventory form, then your quote is based on that. An In-Home Estimate is performed by a Stewart Moving & Storage Professional Move Consultant who is trained, plus has years of experience, knowing how much room your items will take on a truck, how many movers are best to do the job based not only on your items and home layout, but also on time of year and how far away the truck will need to park, among other items. Long-distance moving can be a very new experience to most people, but it’s what our move consultants see on a regular basis and are therefore very experienced with.
If you are planning long distance moving in late spring or summer, the earlier the better! As soon as you know you WILL be moving, even if you don’t have your new address yet, you should call us to secure a spot on the schedule. Giving us a 2-month notice will allow you to get on the schedule on your preferred day and reserve a moving team before the schedule gets full. If you are moving in winter, a month’s notice (or even less, in some cases) is plenty of time to plan and reserve your move with our long distance movers.
We also can bind your estimate – but we prefer not to and that’s because it’s in BOTH our best interests. Stewart Moving & Storage works off of non-binding estimates for a very good reason – long distance move costs are calculated by weight, If you part with more items before your move, do more of the packing yourself, and set yourself up for a very organized move, our long distance movers may end up with a lighter load. In this case, you would pay less than what a binding estimate would require you to pay. But if you have a binding estimate, you will pay the same amount, regardless of how much weight your shipment ends up being The reverse is a concern for us, the moving company - if you are not as prepared as you had planned to be, didn’t part with the items you told us you would, we have to pack more boxes for you than originally planned - we would need to charge you more! Non-binding estimates can be to your benefit and help to “right cost” your move.
There are several factors at play into making your move an affordable long distance move:
This is the list of rules, regulations, available services and resulting charges used by all motor carriers that provide interstate transportation of household goods. The published interstate tariffs are available for your inspection upon request. A separate tariff will apply if you move within the same state. Generally speaking an interstate moving company tariff contains several parts including a title page with everything from effective dates to a company’s FMCSA license numbers to definitions and most importantly, the rates, surcharges, and accessorial charges as well as liability information. An interstate moving company tariff will also provide instructions for how to file a claim in the event of damage, loss, or other moving-related issues. At the end it should contain a terms and conditions section for the bill of lading.
Bring it to the attention of the team of long distance movers right away! They will note it on the paperwork. You will then need to fill out a claims form, noting the inventory number (that will be on your paperwork from the driver), and we will send out a third-party inspection company to see how to best proceed with the repair or replacement of the damaged item. Your chosen level of valuation protection will come into play at this point and each claim is handled on a case-by-case basis. It is always our position to make things right, as best as we can, in the event of damage or other claims, within reason and within the extent of our liability.
