Professional Moving Hacks: How to load the Moving Truck like the Pros

It’s often the last thing you think about when moving; the truck and getting it loaded up. We often put more thought into the decluttering, packing and carrying than we ever do and on the truck is among the times your belongings are the most vulnerable. One mishap and many items can be severely damaged, all in mere seconds. With these truck loading hacks- you’ll look like a pro and your things will arrive as they were when you loaded them.
So what does ‘proper’ loading mean? Not just getting it on the inside of the truck! Loading a moving truck properly means it’s safe for transit and the undamaged delivery of the contents. Did you know that an IMPROPERLY loaded truck can overturn, catch fire, or lose contents (even with the door shut)?!?
Sure, these might be extreme outcomes- but even a shifting load can cause extensive damage to your belongings and a very unstable truck that is difficult to drive.

Start with the big stuff. The heavy furniture. The bulky items. We’re talking Mattresses, dressers, bookcases, armoires- those items. Strap everything in tight- to the walls of the truck. Don’t ever rely on one item holding another item in place- no matter how big or heavy it might be. Shifting items are a leading cause of on truck moving damages!
Then move on to the boxes. Be sure you’re using solid, preferably specific Moving boxes, that are in good condition. It’s also very important to tape them closed- not doing the over/ under flap- tucking method, it isn’t secure enough. And while we’re talking about boxes- it’s always critical to make sure they are FULL. Packing paper or towels, even stuff animals are all great to use to make sure the box is filled and won’t cave in. Over filling and causing the box to bulge is also a ‘no-no’ per the pros. A bulging box is no longer structurally sound and the items are at risk for damage. OH- and another tip; if it fits in a box, it belongs in a box for moving day. Sure; you’ll have some odds and ends that will make for an ‘miscellaneous’ box or two at the end but that’s ok.
Last to go in the truck are those lightweight and odd shaped items. Yard tools, mops, & vacuums, floor lamps or fans, things that won’t fit in a box. Wrap up items that could get damaged in transit. Sometimes it’s best to take these items with you in the car, too- if you can.
What else should you NOT load in the moving truck? Nothing explosive, corrosive, or combustible, nothing alive or perishable… no opened liquids or anything that could spill. And if you’re going long distance, don’t load anything sensitive to extreme heat or cold.

*Oh, and top hack to load the moving truck like the pros- get the right sized truck so it all fits in one trip!
